Hi

Take have a look at HCL list and choose servers which is supported by all vSphere versions.

http://www.vmware.com/go/hcl

Servers are almost identical except RAID adapters - I would choose server with RAID adapter which provides more features (supports more disks, more RAID configurations etc)

If you want to use the DL180 G6 model, you either need to add a P410 RAID controller or select the model which includes the P410 RAID controller. No matter which model you select, make sure you get at least the 512 BBWC/FBWC (better 1GB) write cache for the controller. This makes a HUGE difference in disk speed.

Personally I'd recommend the DL380 G7 model. You may get a so called "Performance Model" for a good price. Performance models usually already include 2 power supplies, 2 CPUs, 12 GB RAM, P410/P411 RAID controller with 512 MB BBWC/FBWC.

Hi,

we use the DL380 G7 model (but with 64 GB RAM, 2 * Xeon X5670 6core, 2,9 Ghz CPU) in a 14 node ESXi Cluster and it works very well.

But if it fits to you depend on your needs. How many VMs do you have, which ressources (e.g. RAM) do they need?

Regards

Andi

Hi again

thanks for your answer, Your answers is very helpful.

i have 3 question :

1. DL380 and DL180 Is Full Compatible with Esxi ? ( in other hardware , like Network Adapter. I know so "HP SMART ARRAY B110I" Does not compatible with esxi. if i choose DL180 i should change it to P410.)

2. i check HCL and See DL180 and DL380 page, in dl380 page we see Versions like Esxi Installable , embedded and Esxi 4.0. but in dl180 page we cant see these versions. Its mean so DL180 Does not Compatible with these Versions of esxi ?

3. In Dl380 HCL page we see this :

Footnotes  :This server uses a processor series  that requires a 4.0 U1 patch (Release Name - ESX400-201002001, Bulletin  ID  ESX400-201002401-BG  / Release Name ESXi400-201002001, Bulletin ID  ESXi400-201002401-BG) or newer for full support.

Whats meaning of this Footnotes ?

thanks for your answers.

Sincerely Yours.

1.) I took a look at the HP Quickspecs and verified that the integrated dual port NIC (NC362i) is listed as supported in the VMware HCL. So it seems the only component you need to add/replace is the RAID controller (please doulbe check with your reseller). However, the DL180 does not seem to support all features (like FT). See http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/vmware/supportmatrix/hpvmware.html

2.) Not sure which HCL you look at, I can see the DL180 G6 (see link above)

3.) This means that support for the DL380 G7 has been added with the ESX(i) 4.0 Update 1 release. So this is the minimum release that will work.

Hello,

Buy the DL380G7, I didn't regret this decision the last six times...

Costs (here in Switzerland) LESS than the DL180 and has FOUR NICs, not "just" two like the DL180.

Furthermore it has 9 DIMM Slots per CPU Socket, DL180 just 6, so you can cheaper upgrade RAM if you want.

As mentionned from the posters above, the DL380 has the P410i Smart Array Controler by default on Board, and normally 256 to 512MB BBW Cache (important for speed and the ability to install ESXi 4.x or 5).

Only "disadvantage" of the DL380 is that it comes with 8 x 2.5" SFF Harddisk Trays (can be upgraded to 16 x 2.5" SFF Trays) and HDDs with the same Space are more expensive in 2.5" SFF instead of 3.5" LFF, but the smaller make less noise.

Regards,

Josip.

PS: If you can get model 470065-537, it comes with just one Six-Core E5645 and you can expand later with another Six-Core E5645. Comes with just 6GB of RAM, but 24GB additional Kingston RAM KTH-PL313K3/24G are around USD 350 (or double if you want original RAM from HP wich includes on-site support in an event of failure).

Hello,

I hope you have more than 2GB RAM.

The G6 has a 64bit capable CPU, this should not be the Problem.

Have you an SmartArray RAID Controller for the Storage Array?

Must be the "real" SAS/SATA SmartArray (e.g. P212, P410), not the B110 on board SATA.

OK.

Have you made a RAID1 Array into the P410 Controller BIOS (F8 after the red-written text Smart Array bla bla).

if yes, everything must work in your case.

If it still doesn't work, download the "Smart Update Firmware DVD", actual is V. 9.30 from the HP Support Homepage.

Contains an ISO, can be put on an USB Stick with the "HP USB Key Utility for Windows" if you want a quicker boot.

Furthermore, you should put the newest BIOS 5.06 of the P410 and Server Firmware on the USB Key.

Boot the Smart Update Firmware and take the last point (must be ProLiant 100 Series Linux whatever), the rest of the process should be self-explaining.

if this will not help, you probably have a harware error.
