host in cluster not the same build number

Hi All,

In my production environment I have a cluster of two Host.

They are both Esxi 5.0 but are not the same build number

ESX-02  ->  VMware ESXi, 5.0.0, 1311175

   ESX-03  ->  VMware ESXi, 5.0.0, 914586

Can anyone tell me if there will be any issue with this config?

Presently there are no HA/FT configured, but will be implemented in a near future

Thanking you in advance

Nicolas

‌hi Nicolas,

no won't cause you any major issues, however I would recommend moving them to the same version. If you use update manager this is easy enough to achieve.

You you may see that one host has newer hardware version support which would cause issues in the event of a failure. As the other host may not support those virtual machines. Also VMware tools may need to be newer on one host.

BEst practice would be to get them to the same level to avoid any strange issues and errors

The ESXi02 build 1311175 is ESXi 5.0 U3

The ESXi03 Build 914586 is ESXi 5.0 U2

Both these hosts support Hardware version from 4 to 8

From vCenter 5.0 onward, mixed ESXi cluster is supported. If you have HA/DRS enabled it is not going to affect your production environment.

However, it would still be a best practice to update this host to the same build number.

To upgrade your ESXi host you can follow the Knowledge Base article below:

This was a concern that we faced in the past as well. One of our biggest issues was keeping up with VM Tools. We would have VM's on hosts several build levels behind. Rest assured though, there is no issue in running your VM's on hosts with different build numbers or different tools versions.

The only exception is Disaster Recovery where your protected VMs must have the VMware Tools version consistent across the board.

Thank you you all for the answers.

Presently there is no DRS set.  But this feature will be enable soon.

i think also that in a cluster, all host should have the same version and build number

i will talk to my team
