hardware compatibility with ESX4 and ESXi 4 inquiry.

I was looking through the compatibility guide for ESX 4 and ESXi 4 today in preperation for moving from ESX 3.5 u3 to ESXi 4. I looked to see if the hardware was compatible using the VMware Compatibility Guide at - The hardware I have appears to be compatible with ESX 4 classic but not ESXi 4. What is the reasoning behind that? I would prefereabley like to install ESXi 4 if at all possible but it's not listed under compable systems. Is this just because VMware hasn't tested it out on the system so they won't support it or is there some other difference which would make the machine compatible with ESX 4 classic and not ESXi 4?

Strange that a system is compatible with ESX 4.0 and not with ESXi 4.0.

Which system is?

Note that there are also other "unofficial" HCL, like:

For hardware support was dropped from 3.5:

The IBM 3650 M2 is listed for ESXi. My guess is that IBM haven't gotten to certifying it yet - the process does take some time.

It is possible depending on the age (where it is in the product life cycle) of the non-M2 that they may not plan on certifying it.

Best bet would be to check with IBM on what their plan is.
