If that is a message you get in the webinterface then read that as (NOTE-this not a joke)

Dear user  - have mercy. Your recent config changes have puzzled me seriously !
Please take smaller steps when changing the config of a VM and give me more time between each action.

Other versions of this error-message are for example:

Failed: cant power off VM in its current state (powered off)
The range of this messages goes from funny to ridiculous - often the message makes no sense at all.

If possible give the VM a few minutes to recover. If possible avoid GUI-functions that answer like that and use direct vmx-file edits ...
For you own mental health do not assume that the VM understood what you wanted to do.
In most cases this flaws are just funny and annoying but not serious ...
Just pretend you have heard nothing, have a cigarette and come back a few minutes later.

If you get the dreaded "cant do this in the current state of the VM" inside a log-file it is more serious - but very likely still a poorly worded error-message.
And again : as my answer looks like a joke - it is not meant as a joke  at all. Probably you are pushing the webinterface too hard.

Ulli
