Can you please clarify what exactly you do. What's the source and what's the destination?

If you are copying large files to a VMFS datastore, you will have to make sure the block size used to format the VMFS datastore is sufficient. For files larger than 256 GB, the block size has to be at least 2MB.

Two questions:

  • is the VM powered off (not locked)?
  • is the external disk formatted with e.g. NTFS to allow large files?

What do you mean with external disk? A USB disk connected to your PC?

In this case check if it formatted with NTFS instead of FAT32.

Are you copying from your local PC OR from your ESXi?

The vmdk is thich or thin? If is thin, which is the vmdk max size?

Have you check the VMFS block size?
