vendor customized images and VMware standard images has same esx-base. Only difference is vendors has injected the custom vibs specific to their hardware. Since with this patch you aren't going to update any custom vib related to hardware, only base image will be updated. So no chance for any issue related to any hardware, this is what I meant.

VMware patches are cumulative, so if you will apply VMware ESXi 5.5, Patch ESXi-5.5.0-20170304001-standard (2149578) you dont need to install the left ones.

If you apply HP customized image, then this will not cover the remediation of vulnerability you are looking for because HPE 5.5 U3 image was released in 2016 whereas the above one is released on march 2017.  

If you see the content of given VMware image VMware ESXi 5.5, Patch ESXi-5.5.0-20170304001-standard (2149578) | VMware KB you will see it only contains esx-base, so you can apply it. This won't interrupt anything.
