esxi 5 zip file??

Hello,

Using the host update utility I am trying to upgrade a esxi 4.0 host to 5.0. It asks for the 5.0 zip file but all I can find are .iso files. Am I missing it somewhere?

With vCenter Server/Update Manager 5 in place that's the recommended option, the other option is an interactive upgrade using the ESXi 5.0 installation CD.

Two hints though.

  • ESXi 4.0 Update 2 is not compatible with vCenter Server 5, so if use this version and plan to upgrade vCenter Server you first need to upgrade the hosts to e.g. ESXi 4.0 Update 3. See http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2007269
  • If the hosts have previously been upgraded from version 3.5 you may not be able to upgrade to ESXi 5.0.

Please take a look at the Upgrade guide for details.

PS: In any case, you need to upgrade vCenter Server to version 5 before upgrading the hosts!

I doubt this will work. The Host Update Utility is only supported for upgrades from 3.5 to 4.0 and for patching ESXi 4.0.

Thanks Andre I was not aware of that. I am still new to these products. So update through vCenter Server would be the best option you think?
