esxi 5.0 on dual xeon 5650 ?

Greeting,

I installed esxi 5.0 on DUAL xeon 5650.

When I check summary from vSphere Client, it shows following ...

CPU Cores = 12 CPUs x 2.66GHz

processor sockets = 2

Cores per Socket = 6

Logical Processors = 24

but why CPU Capacity shows 12 x 2.66GHz ?

not sure if esxi 5.0 compatible to dual xeon 5650 ?

please advise

thanks

It shows as 24 because hypertreading is enabled.

In actual the processor is capable of handling only 12 threads Max, because you got only 12 Cores hence it shows as 12X2.66GHz. So ESXi will see it as only 12 Cores.

Intel Xenon 56XX is supported with ESXI 5.0 refer the below Link:-

Your question will be best answered if we put it in this way.. How Hyperthreading works?..

Hyperthreading technology allows a single physical processor to behave like two

logical processors. The processor can run two independent applications at the

same time. While hyperthreading does not double the performance of a system, it

can slightly increase performance by keeping the processor pipeline busier.

So it can slightly increase the performance by keeping processor pipeline busier- so ESXi will see only the avaible cores that is 12 so it will 12X2.66GHz.
