esxi 4.0 error while initial setup: booting: mbi=0x00100d8, entry = 0x00100212

Hi!

I tried to install ESXi 4.0 to get familiar with it, but while running the installation routine, I got this error message:

booting: mbi=0x00100d8, entry = 0x00100212

There the system hangs Smiley Sad

Configuration of my test system: Dell Precision 650, 2x XEON 2,8GHz, 2GB RAM, 72GB SCSI, NVIDIA Quadro FX1000,...

I already ran a BIOS update without any success.

- What does the error message mean?

- Is it possible to run ESXi 4.0 with this machine at all? (or an older version)

THX, Ponti

I would doubt that you will have success with a standard install. I would visit http://vm-help.com. That site is dedicated to supporting unsupported hardware.

Please check with your HW, are they on the HCL?

For example, is the XEON 2,8GHz CPU 64bit? ESXi needs 64bit CPU.

Ponti,

This means that the installation wont start.

If your process is 32bit, like Intel Xeon 2.8GHz Prestonia, the installation will not start.

Is the 64 bit requirement new to 4.0 ESXi?

I have an old 32 desktop (celeron even) that I've been using as a 3.5i test platform for some time. It's not a racecar, but it works fine for a few small VM's. This weekend I decided to upgrade to 4.0, and got the dreaded "booting: mbi=0xYYYYYYY" at install.

Thoughts/suggestions?

Yes,

64bit system is required. It can not works on 32bit CPU.
