enabling VT on HP DL380 G4

I've read a bunch of threads and searched google for a couple hours last night.  The processor I have I am about 95% sure supports VT.  However, in the bios there is no mention of it and in ESXi it says I can't install anything 64 bit because the processor doesnt support VT.  I can't really find any info about the processor, other than it is a 2.8GHz dual core xeon with 800MHz FSB.  It is stuck to the heat sink really good and even held in with plastic so I really dont want to take it off.  With that info it would lead me to believe it is this processor:  http://ark.intel.com/products/27225/Intel-Xeon-Processor-7030-%282M-Cache-2_80-GHz-800-MHz-FSB%29  there are some HP part numbers on it, but the number on the bottom says 2800DP/4M/800.  Additionally, I can't find ANY dual core xeon processors that don't support it VT.  I updated the bios to what I think is the latest version, but they dont have a bios section on it for some reason.  It lists the bios for OS...  Anyone have any ideas?

you're probably right with the processor.  WIth that said, it supports VT-x.  I also believe the most current BIOS level would be 05/02/11.  While in the BIOS do you have "advanced features"

Hello.

I had to do this recently on some HP gear, and it is buried quite a few menus down and isn't obvious at all.  Like Troy says, start with "Advanced Options" I belive this is the wording.

Good Luck!

I do not have "advanced features" and I installed the latest firmware according to the HP website.  It is version "2007.07.19 (A) 24 Jan 2008"  If there is an unofficial version somewhere I would love to try it.

I can upload a pic of my BIOS options if you would like to see it, but i saw a youtube video with the advanced features option and its definately not there on my server.

And I have a DVD firmware update DVD that I am going to try when I get home tonight.  Hopefully that has the newest BIOS...

I don't have a DL380 G4, but I do have a DL580 G5... Let me reboot and see what I can find.

different menu for the G5's... It may be the G4 BIOS doesn't support VT

What is the output of 'esxcfg-info | grep HV'?

I'm assuming thats a command I type into vmware?

Yes.  Type that command at a shell prompt on the ESX host.

HV support of 0 means that the CPU does not support VT-x at all.  I suspect you may have one of these:

According to the HP Quickspecs (http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12028_div/12028_div.html) there is a special model with the Dual Core processor kit

Dual-core Intel Xeon Processor        2.8 GHz/800MHz-2x2MB L2
NOTE: This kit is not backwards compatible,        existing systems cannot be upgraded.
(399631-001)

and this CPU supports VT (see e.g. http://www.keenzo.com/showproduct.asp?ID=934332). However, I've been working with HP servers for more than 10 years and I'm quite sure the first server that supported VT-x (CPU plus BIOS) was the G5 model.

Well thats majorly dissappointing... Is there any way to confirm that?  Theres not much info on as far as model numbers on it.  I do have 2 other processors here as well, but they are single core 3.4GHz processors.  They say 3400DP/1M/800 on the bottom of them.  Could they support VT?

So theres no hack to enable it?  This isn't a mission critical server, just going to be a web and game server.  I am going to need 64 bit OS's though...and more than one at a time...

According to ftp://download.intel.com/support/processors/xeon/sb/309159.pdf, the processor that I referred to earlier is family 15 model 4.  I believe that esxcfg-info reports family and model.  The bottom side markings indicated on page 7 look like what you reported, except that there should be a voltage as well.

Possibly, but unlikely.  These sound like http://ark.intel.com/products/27088/64-bit-Intel-Xeon-Processor-3_60-GHz-1M-Cache-800-MHz-FSB.

Oops.  Make that http://ark.intel.com/products/27085/64-bit-Intel-Xeon-Processor-3_40-GHz-1M-Cache-800-MHz-FSB.

Unfortunately, it looks like the entire Xeon 7000 series is also family 15 model 4, so this doesn't really help.

Nonetheless, if HV Support is 0, you can be sure that the CPU does not support VT-x.

esxcfg-info listed about 100 pages of info, how do I get just processor info?  And that link does seem like the processor that I have, although there is definately no voltage listed and the country code is SL8NA COSTA RICA.  Does this processor support VT?  It doesnt really say in the PDF...

Reading that pdf brought up something else...the socket on the motherboard says mPGA604 while all those processors youve been sending are PPGA604

Does that say 0 if the processor doesnt support it or only if ESXi cant access it?  For instance if its disabled in the BIOS?

Here's the HV Support key:

0 - The processor does not have VT

1 - VT is disabled in the BIOS

2 - VT is available, but is missing features required by ESX

3 - VT is available, enabled, and supported by ESX

Interesting...I would really like to know what processor is in this thing.  Does anyone know of a program to run that gets that info?

Doesn't have to be linux, I can even install xp on it quick...
