Check this KB article: Overview of vNetwork Distributed Switch concepts (1010555)

And about configuration file, on Standard Switch the configuration resides on each ESX/ESXi host and on Distributed Switch, the configuration is centralized on vCenter Server and stored on vCenter database.

Hi Prakash,

There are 2 pain points that DRS primarily address.

1. Initial placement of the VM on hosts in the cluster.(CPU/Memory)

2. Load balancing (CPU/Memory)

In case of partial DRS automation level:

Initial placement is performed automatically. Migration recommendations are displayed, but do not run. Hence balancing recommendations you need to apply. it will not be automatic .

There is no difference in algorithm itself. Same algorithm, just DRS gives flexibility for user.

Let me know if you want to know any other details.
