delete LUN with active scatch configuration

Hello Community,

I have to delete a LUN with a active SCATCH configuration.

One ESX Server logs to this datastore. The Datastore musst be destroyed but I can not relocate the scratch partition because I can not boot the ESX.

What will happen if the ESX logs to a LUN which is not accessable?

kind regards

Dennis

Hi,

When the ESX server boots up (I am assuming this is off at the moment.) -- It will complain with the following error message :

System logs on host *yourhostname* are stored on non-persistent storage.

You will have a chance to correct this by going to configuration -> advanced settings -> syslog -> syslog.globallogdir [DATASTORE] scratch/log (example).

Let me know if this helps.

The LUN which is being configured for scratch can be repointed to a different location. However a LUN should not be detached from a host when being accessed by the host. This would result in a APD situation and cause host go unresponsive.

The following article helps on the procedure for the same. Once the configuration is changed the host needs a reboot for the change to be in effect.

Hello Sharath,

thank you for your answer.

And that is exactly my problem. I have to reboot the host but I can not because there are productive machines on it which can not be moved.

How can I set up the location to default?

I mean to a non persistent storage?

With the existing stage we cannot configure a new scratch partition. We can use a local volume if there is any to configure so that we have a persistent location.

The logging now is in Non-persistant state and logs wont be saved post host reboot.
