Frank gave the right values.

To check it yourself, Log in into vCenter server using vSphere client,

Click on the vCenter object > Alarms > Definitions > Right-Click on datastore usage on disk and go to Edit it.

You will find the values under Triggers.

The default threshold is 75% and 85%, respectively.

From official 5.1 documentation :

The Datastore usage on disk alarm is one of the many default alarms included with vCenter Server. The alarm is enabled at installation. If the used disk space on the datastore exceeds 75 percent, the alarm triggers a Warning. If the used disk space on the datastore then exceeds 85 percent, the alarm triggers an Alert.

Same can be checked from web client as well Vi client

Thanks

another question, how much % should i leave free on the datastores? we want to utilize the luns as much as possible if we dont have to leave too much free space.

any issues with going as high as 95-98% utilization?

It's good to have at least 10% free space. It would be great if its 20%.

If you are taking snapshots and other backup softwares are running in your environment its good to add another datastore when the default warning comes up.

Again it depends on how much you can spare. But if you ask me, 15% is a must for a healthy environment.

To warn you, if the datastore fills up the machines present on it might power off or become unresponsive.
