custom configuration parameters and guestInfo.foo

Is it possible to retain custom configuration parameters when cloning a machine in vSphere 5?

I have a base image of a machine which I want to clone for rapid-deployment, but we have a special configuration directive in the .vmx file which is not getting copied to the clone target (though it appears fine in the original machine both in the .vmx file and in the "Configuration Parameters").

Is there any other way of doing this?  (OVF isn't such a good option since there's a lot of code that depends on fetching the data from the existing key via VMWare Tools in the guest)

Update:

I'm actually not sure that this is a cloning issue, as the values seem to be disappearing from the custom config parameters dialog (and the .vmx file).  Is it possible to set guestInfo custom parameters via the Custom Config Parameters dialog, or must I hard-code them into the .vmx file like I used to do in the free hypervisor?
