Hi All, The host, ESXi 41 is booted from USB 4 GB flash drive. Out of 4GB, 1GB is used for OS partition. SCRATCH was not configured due to the lack of required free space, 4GB. Is it possible to use the freespace (3GB) for scratch partition? I have created a FAT16 partition with the remaining space (3GB). However I dont have any clue how to convert\mount it as scratch partion. - the host doesnt have a local disk. Your help is highly appreciated.

The device must both be larger than 5 GB, but also be a physical hard drive for the scratch partition to be created. If on USB there will not be a scratch partition no matter the size of the USB unit.
I think the ESXi 4.1 host will only use a FAT16 partition if it is atleast 4GB in size. Also it is not recommended to have the scratch location on a USB device due to the limited I/O capabilities. I suggest creating the scratch location on a VMFS volume.
Create a directory on the VMFS folder such as .locker-ESXHostName
Then using the vSphere Client edit the Advanced Settings of the host, go to ScratchConfig and set ScratchConfig.ConfguredScratchLocation to be the full path to this directory, e.g. /vmfs/volumes/datstorename/.locker-ESXHosName.

So if you use 4GB there is not alot of space!! Use a bigger usb flash drive.
