connecting the VI client

Hi-

I have a standalone vSphere 4 server that I have copied to VMs to for the purpose of starting a lab. I also have a laptop that I have changed the IP address on to be in the same subnet as the vSphere server.

I have connected these machines to a 4 port linksys switch.

Laptop:

10.10.2.126/255.255.0.0 no gateway

vSphere Host

10.10.2.125/255.255.0.0 / 10.10.1.254 gw

I can ping the VI Client machine from the Host, and I am also able to ping the ESX host from the VI Client machine. However, when I try to connect the VI Client to the vSphere server I get a timeout error, and the VI Client does not connect.

Do I need to remove the gateway on the vSphere host in order for this to work? The gateway is actually not available...

Thanks,

Any luck if you give both servers the same gateway? Does the linksys switch have any port restrictions? Are you running a firewall on your laptop?

Thanks for the response -

the issue ended up being that IE had a Proxy server set. I had to set the IE proxy to nothing, no auto detect checked either, in order for the VI client to connect.

I'll test more to be absolutely certain but that appears to be why i couldn't connect to the ESX host on the same subnet.
