connecting from Management Port to 1st Port Group on vSwitch0

On a fresh ESXi 4.1 install, by default there are both a Management Network VMkernel Port and a VM Port Group on vSwitch0. In my case, this is connected to vmnic0, with a physical nic at 192.168.1.204

The VM Port Group contains a single VM at 192.168.1.50

I can ping .204 from my physical network, but I cannot ping .50 from either the physical network or the ESXi CLI

Is there something I need to do in order to make that work ? It appears that both the VMkernel Port and the VM Port Group are connected to the same vSwitch. I don't understand why they don't see each other.

VMport group side, you don't need to do any setting. Check this

- VM is mapped correcty , and connected to vmport group

- ping from the vm to the vmkernel.

I'm not sure what you mean by mapped correctly, but the VM is part of the VM Port Group and connected to vSwitch0.

I can ping the management ip of the host ( .204), but I cannot ping the VM (.50) from the management ip (.204) and I cannot ping the management ip from the VM.

Then you need to check inside the vm, VM TCP settings. Because VM is not coming in the network (portgroup only provides the connectivity, no setting changes require).

The settings in the VM are correct (.50 on the same 192.168.1.0 network).

Any ideas ?

check vm firewall settings (windows generally blocks the icmp)
