compatibility between ESX 4.0.0 and ESX 3.5

How compatible between ESX 3.5 ann ESX 4.0.0? Can VM created with ESX 4.0.0 run on ESX 3.5? or vise versa?

Hello.

Virtual machines created in ESX 3.5 are fully compatible with ESX 4.0, and virtual machines created on ESX 4.0 can be compatible with ESX 3.5. As long as virtual machines created on ESX 4.0 use the v4 virtual machine version, they will be backwards compatible with ESX 3.5. Any virtual machines created with virtual machine version v7 on ESX 4.0 will not be backwards compatible with ESX 3.5.

Good Luck!

Vmroyale is right, and everything is about Virtual Hardware. And if you plan to upgrade Virtual Hardware, you'll need to upgrade VMWare Tools first (= some downtime)

But you need to be careful since some apps can be impacted by an hardware change.

Moreover, vCenter 4, can interoperate with an ESX 3.5 & 4 mixed cluster (can occur if you migrate your ESX one at once)
