client and console crash: syntax error '(' unexpected --

I've got an ESXi 4.1 server where the console session crashes, with the repeated message

"/sbin/dcui: line 6: syntax error: ')' unexpected"

At the same time, the vSphere client goes off line.

The virtual machines continue working.

I have a VM that triggers this crash immediately, or sometimes it just happens without any particular cause.

What causes this kind of failure? And what is line 6?

Have you modified any files manually on the os?

you might need to look at the logs to see whats causing the error...

The DCUI is Direct Console User Interface (DCUI)

Its useful for some control operations such as

  • Configure Root password
  • Configure Lockdown mode
  • Configure Management network
  • Restart Management Network
  • Test or disable Management
  • Configure Keyboard
  • View Support Information
  • View System Logs
  • Restart Management Network
  • Reset System Configuration
  • Remove Custom Extensions
  • Shutdown or Restart /Reboot the ESXi Server

quickest solution I can think of is to migrate needed virtual machines out to another host or backup vm files and reinstall ESXi on the host..

Agree with a clean reinstall. Seems that some file is corrupted or wrong.
