in regards to forgotten root password for ESXI 5 below is the answer from VMware.

ESXi 3.5, ESXi 4.x, and ESXi 5.x

Reinstalling the ESXi host is the only supported way to reset a password on ESXi.  Any other method may lead to a host failure or an unsupported configuration due to the complex nature of the ESXi architecture. ESXi does not have a service console and as such traditional Linux methods of resetting a password, such as single-user mode do not apply.

"Virtualinfra" is quite right, been there and done that recently, only thing to mention is if you are going to do this and you have a datastore locally ensure you preserve the current volume when you do this, don't format Smiley Happy

If you have a ESXi host still connected to vCenter, but forgot the local root password, you can reset it using host profiles. This is from my blog:

  1. Right click the host, choose Host Profile, and Create Profile from Host. Run through the wizard to create the new profile.
  2. At the top of the vSphere client, click Home and Host Profiles under the Management section
  3. Right click the newly created profile and choose Edit.
  4. Expand Security Configuration and click Administrator password. Choose “Configure a fixed administrator password” and enter your desired password. Click OK to save changes to the profile.
  5. Apply the profile to the host.
