Can we attaching one physical nic to two switches in ESX 4.0

If you open the dialog where you add a physical adapter to a vSwitch you'll find a note that if you choose an adapter which is already assigned to a different vSwitch, that adapter will be moved.

No. If you need connectivity for both vSwitches and only one NIC then you should connect NIC to on switch and create router VM connected to both switches.

I agree, this is not possible. But you can have more than one port group in a vSwitch that will allow All VMs to use the single NIC. I presume you need this for VM separation? Using different port groups with VLANs will allow this with security.
