If I understand you correctly, the datastore is empty, but still cannot be removed.

Some reasons might be:

  • the datatore is in use by HA (Datastore Heartbeat)
  • one, or more VMs have an ISO image configured in their settings, which points to that datastore
  • one, or more VMs have active snapshots, where the snapshot was created e.g. the virtual CD was pointing to this datastore

you understand correctly,

- i have 4 datastores use to the heartbeat but not this

result of ls -a (from directory of my datastore with my ESX SSH connection )

ls -a
. .. .fbb.sf .fdc.sf .pb2.sf .pbc.sf .sbc.sf .sdd.sf .vSphere-HA .vh.sf

I dont' understand

I don't have any snapshot, check with RVTOOLS

i have more than 300 VMs,

can I check ISO with command line

RVtools have a tab for vCDROM as well so you can check for ISO that way. But when a ISO is used than you also see a "VM" on that datastore. On the shell i think you can "grep" trough all *.vmx files and search for *.iso" is maybe possible.

Another reason can be

  1. Configured Scratch location
  2. Configured for systemlogs

I solve that by shutting down the ESXi. Adjust the ACL on the SAN so that ESXi doesnt have access anymore and start Host again.

Btw. i have in mind that VMFS upgrade from 5->6 isnt possible and you need to create new VMFS Datastores from scratch. But i think thats what are you trying to do.

Joerg
