can't power on VM because of "Corrupt redo log"

Hi,

I filled this request with Support too..

During a deployement at my client's site, one of his VMs don't boot. One of the hard disks in the RAID 5 spindle is dead. The VM (it's the only one, but critical) was down this morning when we arrived at client's site.

"Corrupt redo lo" errof message found in the log file in the vm's directory.

I found this KB, but there is not a real step by step how to solve this error..

Anyone had experienced this error yet? And can help with it?

I could never recover from redo log corruption. You can try copying the VMDK files (disk and deltas) to another datastore and try to consolidate them.

That's what's I'm trying to do at the moment. I'm shifting the files to a new provisioned LUN. The copy will continue the whole night, I guess, because the DATA disk is very big.

By consolidating files you mean? Deleting the snapshots? Because the VM has some snapshots....

I would suggest that you don't do anything until you hear from support and especially do NOT consolidate snapshots. At this point with a "corrupt redo log" you risk losing not only the current VM but the base disk as well. Do whatever you need to do to protect what you have.

I agree with Marcelo...You are copying files, but not moving them...So you have a duplicate copy even if anything goes wrong with copied files. Please go ahead with copying to new datastore and try consolidating them....

I am not disagreeing with trying to consolidate snapshots just reinforcing that you should NEVER work on the problem files. Work on the copies only.
