I registered today to see if I can get the free 6.5/6.7 exsi.  it returned a license key and download page. but no matter what browser I use, the "Manually Download" button doesn't work.

It's possible that your access to Akamai hosted services is blocked. Depending on the politics of the country you are in, or the politics between the US and the country you are in, it's possible that

(1) Akamai or Akamai's customer (in this case VMware) has blocked access based on the originating IP or

(2) Akamai is blocked by the country you are in because that country has decided to do so

For reason (1), you will unlikely get a clear answer whether it is Akamai or Akamai's customer who have chosen to block access based on originating IP; but usually this would be to fulfill things such as US sanctions/embargo against a particular nation/state.

But whether it is reason (1) or (2), your only possible workaround is to use a VPN. If it's reason (2), certain "well-known" VPNs will also be blocked as it is a cat-and-mouse game.

@GayathriS,

that's the page i keep trying. when clicking on the manual download button nothing happens. no popup occurs. other buttons on page work when clicked on, but not "manual download". don't know why their "akamai download manager" isn't working for me currently. popups are turned off. i read the support page about download issues. i've allowed "vmware.com" exceptions too. odd, their support issues popups work, but not the download manager popup.

@bluefirestorm,

i put in a support ticket, we'll see.

as for reason (1), possible,  but i wasn't using a VPN when getting updated lic + downloads in myvmware.  i do make use of opennic dns servers though. Akamai is known to be blocked from many places along with Akamai blocking well known services, as you mention some VPN services.  i changed opennic to quad9. didn't help, but didn't think it would.

as for reason (2), not applicable in this case.

tech support may be able to help & i'll try one a few VPNs i have.

thanks

I have downloaded the trial, however can't get in to the program. When I open the program, I get a screen with three choices to sign in. I pick the prompt, "Rigistered for a trial? Sign in to begin your trial." I click that sign-in catch and a window brought up marked "sign in" with only a white field with a littler black box inside. There is nothing for me to fill in or click, so I can't sign in.

I'm in the same situation.  I'm a registered user with a license for ESXi 6.0, but the buttons
on the download page don't work.  (I used two different browsers, cleared all, no cache issues, etc.)

And there's no possible reason to block addresses, from the block of IP addresses
my new ISP uses.  74.123.77.X    (There's no hacks out here.)

_________________________________________________________

I can see some sort of secondary verification, beyond username and password,
but to simply state " it's not possible to download without a VPN ", and even that can be "iffy"....

If I was on your Sales Team, I'd be seriously concerned.  Potential customers are not

going to doggedly pursue "why" they can't download.  They'll take the path of least resistance

and go to the competition.

(And the competition is probably thanking Akamai for their policy.)

Same here.

Tried four different browsers, private browsing, clear cache and so on, but the "Manually Download"-button does not work.

Been struggling with this for 45 mins. This is totally brain dead.

Hi

Had the same issue. Clicking on Manual Download button triggered a JS error (seen in the browser console), complaining that the `utag` object isn't defined. I've inspected the JS script at that line and found the link below [1]. Opening the link in another tab showed a JSON object [2]. Opening the "popupurl" link allowed me to download the ISO file.

[1] https://my.vmware.com/group/vmware/evalcenter?p_p_id=evalcenter_WAR_itevals_INSTANCE_z9LN&p_p_lifecy...

[2]

popupurl     "https://download2.vmware.com/software/esx/67u3/VMware-VMvisor-Installer-6.7.0.update03-14320388.x86_64.iso?HashKey=da*********" openmodal     "no" popupmode     "manual"

Examining the page console I can see the issue.

Loading the page reveals that https://tags.tiqcdn.com/utag/vmware/myvmware/prod/utag.js cannot be obtained.

This is a tracking tag tool provided by Tealium, likely to help track download stats and other fancy/juicy marketing data.

When navigating to that domain, my corporate filter went nuts basically flashing red, blocked for security reasons etc.

It appears that a blocked domain for Tealium, the aforementioned tagging service, breaks the download button.

Here's some other evidence I found looking on the subject

iQ blocked by Firefox Tracking Protection? - Tealium Learning Center

So being part of blacklists on several platforms may be a big issue!

At the very least vmware should not have a failure of this stop the user from downloading...

This is an incorrect answer.  It has NOTHING to do with akamai being blocked,

The actual problem is that utag.js uses a crappy minifier that injects syntax errors in it.

Screenshot from 2019-10-22 11-35-09.png

Which makes it impossible for `utag_data` in the `onclick` utag_data.page_name to evaluate.

For those trying to download the iso in a hurry, using chrome:

1) right-click on the manually download button of whichever ISO you want to download and you'll see something like:

Screenshot from 2019-10-22 11-37-32.png

Screenshot from 2019-10-22 11-39-23.png

You'll see something like above:

2. double-click on the onclick="if(utag_data.page_name)

3. use the arrow-keys to start editing

Note if you accidentally delete the tag, just reload the page and start again.

4. Change the utag_data.page_name in the parentheses to false and press enter. It should change to this:

Screenshot from 2019-10-22 11-45-22.png

5. WITHOUT RELOADING THE PAGE click the "Manually Download" button again and your download should start.

My solution, kind of a hack, I have successfully downloaded esxi today with this so I know that it works at least using chrome.

If you can share a screenshot of what you exactly did, or maybe a video of your steps, maybe I can help.
