I have tried to read about this but I could not find any doc from vmware explaining this in details.
my question is
can a hot-add based backup benefit from CBT on vmfs6 and vsphere6.5 considering the sesparse snapshots??
can you elaborate on this a bit more? which benefits do you expect to get?
I suppose that the only thing you can get is UNMAP and nothig more Snapshot Formats on VMFS
The benefits of using CBT.. where the image based backups will be faster.
I am not sure if sesparse snapshots will benefit from use of CBT.. I have read in some articles that hot-add based snapshots have become slower and also with vmfs6 the NBD is also SSL encrypted.
just wanted to have clear understanding before upgrade to 6.5
NBD is always slower for backup operations.
6.5 was released 11 months ago. I doubt that there could be significant difference in backup speeds on VMFS5 and VMFS6.
At least you can test this in your environment ![]()
Hi Finikiez,have
Thank you for the response.
I am little unclear about this sesparse based snapshots and how exactly they impact the backup performance.
specifically the hot-add based.
I am aware about the UNMAP benefits..
As we know most of the image based VM backup solutions benefit from Changed block tracking(CBT) what impact would the change have on this ..?
AFAIK there is no difference between VMFS5 and VMFS6
CBT works the same way.
