can a VM be created in esxi5.5 from the necessary esxi4.0 VM files?

ie from the .vmdk, .vmx files or do you need to use eg the vmware converter?

Thanks

Michael

Hello Michael,

If all the VM files are present in the datastore, and if this datastore is also accessible to 5.5 ESXi host, then you can just right click the .vmx file and add to inventory and choose the 5.5 ESXi host.

VMware converter is used to perform a v2v conversion which is also possible. However, the above mentioned step is much easier.

You can use the files (.vmx and/or .vmdk) from a VM created on ESXi 4 on a ESXi 5, just copy to a datastore, right click on .vmx file and register the virtual machine. If you don't have the .vmx file, just create a new virtual machine and choose the existing .vmdk file.
