bootable images for a DR plan without tools like VEEAM

Hi we have a VM-Ware 5.5 install and have some multidisk vms running on it we do not have VEEAm available and I have been out of the vmware loop since 3.5 where I had command line scripting tools to copy live backups/snapshots to NFS mounts.

How would i goo about backing up a multi VMDK VM from its folder to a file system directory and have this copy be bootable  as the original machine in case of a VMWARE host failure?

Have you considered using vSphere Replication - its free after you have paid for ESXi and vCenter licenses
