best practice for storing vm and vhd

probably this question was answered not once... sorry

I would like to know the best practice for storing vm and it's vhd on SAN.

Is there any advantage performance wise for keeping them on separate LUN?

It really is going to depend on the application the VM - but for most applications there is no issue in storing everything on the same datastore
