about vcpu's & vsmp's

Im planning to upgrade some hosts on my vsphere cluster to dual 6-cores and i need to install some big database servers there.

im running with enterprise license, it gives me vsmp 4-way. im not correctly understood the vsmp 4-way & 8-way differences, so

im little confused in here, because i liked to get all the power of those 6-cores for my database vm's on those hosts.

are you ppl running with 12vcpu's or are u using the undocumented cpuid.coresPerSocket feature on vm's ?

Correct, 4-way vSMP allows a VM to use 4 physical processors/cpu.

Only way to use it in a supported manner is create a 4vCPU VM. So you will not be utilizing all 6 cores unfortunately. But I would start out with 2 and monitor the VM first and see if it actually needs more or not as not many workloads need these kind of configs.
