XP shows 2 instead of 4 CPU

Hi All,

I am running VMWare EXSi using Client Workstation 7.0 and installed Windows XP 64 bit. Before installing the OS, l selected 4 virtual processors. However, after installation, l realised that only 2 CPUs are used. Task Manager shows 2 CPU tracks but device manager shows 4 processors used. My machine is AMD six-operaton.

Any help is much appreciated!

XP supports only 2 CPUs, and ESXi is presenting each assigned CPU as single-core CPU. Try to set cpuid.coresPerSocket = 2 in VM Advanced Settings for XP VM.

Anton,

Thanks for the information. I have already installed the OS on the VM. Is it okay to change the virtual processor from 4 to 2 without affecting the system and performance?

Cheers,
