Windows Seven and ESX 4.0

Hi all.

Today I try to install Windows 7 RTM on Virtual machine - just try Smiley Happy When installation program show 80% complete it breaks. Mouse pointer moves and nothing go on. vCenter shows 100% memory utilization of VM. 1,5 Gb of 2Gb total ESX host RAM was busy. I turn off VM but vCenter show what RAM not become free. I try to repeat installation on another two ESX host and situation repeat with similar symptoms. I use HP Proliant DL 360 G5 Server, vSphere Standart Edition, Windows 7 Eng build 7600. Have anybody similar problem?

Sorry for my bad English Smiley Happy

1) Windows 7 hasn't been released yet

2) Windows 7 on ESX is STILL experimental

3) Windows 7 being a beta and not fully supported, there are going to be some problems and bugs, but you can try a different configuration (Windows XP, 2003,etc..).

Bottom line is you have to wait until it's been fully implemented and / or Windows 7 has been finalized.

Small info: Windows 7 is available to download from MSDN (with Windows 2008 R2)

I have been able to get a windows 7 vm up and running on an ESXi host just fine. I had no problems with not too many resources allocated to it. But i had a similar issue trying to put 7 on just a regular machine with the stopping and all. In that instance my download of the iso had somehow been a little off and messed up the install. After redownloading it all worked fine. Not sure if that applies here, but might be worth a try.

vHardware 7, OS type: Vista x64, SCSI: LSI Parallel

Win7 x64 RTM works fine

My colleague got the same problem as you with SCSI: LSI SAS and OS Type: Win7 (Experimental). After he changed to settings to mine and reinstalled, everrything is ok.

Not sure what exactly went wrong first time.

MSDN is NOT a release, that is a development download. And the point IS that VM ware hasn't had time to test it with ESX yet, that ALSO takes time. So yes you can get it (I have already and have had it since first BETA). You can't expect VM Ware to support something that hasn't been RELEASED to the public.

Nothing went wrong that's the risk with beta software and experimental support... That's why the disclaimer.

Why you are calling it development download? Image which you can download today (today was released RTM version to MSDN subscribers) will be the same as iso which will be available to the public. I totally agree that VMWare must have some time to support this product and my "Small info" was regarding RTM version availability at MSDN.

Umm let me think.. MSDN. That means Microsoft DEVELOPMENT Network, hence a special access is required, can everyone download from MSDN? No only people with a MSDN license, hence it's NOT publicly available, hence it's a DEVELOPMENT download, hence it hasn't been released (GA)

Once its released (GA) then it becomes mainstream, then it gets put on the MAIN stable update for VM Ware. Which by usual VM Ware standards is 1 to 2 months before they will finalize support Windows 7 for VI Client and Guest OS.

There is no need to be sarcastic. I was reffering ONLY to your first point where you wrote that W7 has not been released (there was no "public" word on your post) and I'm not shouting "where is W7 support?". I totally agree with you that it must take some time for development and testing on VMWare side for making this product supported.

I suppose in near future. We all waiting for official Windows 7 support and VMware knows that, so they make their best efforts to provide support ASAP.
