Windows 2008 R2 "Time machine"

Dear everybody,

I'm faced to the following problem: (first of all I'm not sure is this a esx issue)

I have a Windows 2008 R2 server on a ESXi 5.1

a few days ago I need to restart this server. The shutdown process was successfully accomplished. But when the operating system was booted I got an error screen:

If I choose the Repair I could do anything in command line, but it's not interesting.

If i Choose the Start normally in this case the windows is boot up normally I have desktop and I could do everything. I can install or uninstall application, or really everything.

But if i restart the server it's boot up again with the error screen, and after when i choose the normally start and the OS is booted up, all of my previously made changes lost. If i previously uninstall or delete an application now this deleted file available and the uninstalled application are still installed. If i installed an application or made a directory now this isn't available. All of the log files are missing between the first failed boot and the last boot

All of the log files re missing between.

Does anybody have idea what could happen?

Welcome to the Community,

with the VM powered off, open it's settings and check whether you configured its virtual disk as "Independent - Non-Persistent", which would explain the behaviour.

Dear André

Thank you the quick reply.

I examined the setting which you mentioned. It wasn't set. I tried to turn on the Independent mode, and set it persistent.

But when booted up the server and I made some changes after the restart the changes again lost. So it isn't solve the problem.

I left the Independent mode on, and set to persistent.

Unless you need/want an independent virtual disk (which is excluded from snapshots), remove the check mark again.

Please use the advanced editor to attach the virtual machine's .vmx file as well as its latest vmware.log to see whether they contain any hints.

Turned off the independent mode.

attached the vmx file

and a question do you mean vmkernel.log when you wrote vmware.log file?

vmware.log can be found in the VM directory and its different from vmkernel.log

Please consider marking this answer "correct" or "helpful" if you found it useful.

I can't see anything wrong in the log file!? Can you please try to create a couple of files (text files, doc files, ...) within the VM. E.g. some files in your user's documents  folder and maybe a new folder in the VM's c:\ root folder to see whether they are lost with the reboot too? This is to check whether this could be a Windows issue, where it - for whatever reason - reverts to the last known good configuration when rebooting.

Ok, this should rule out guest OS issues. Anyway, I also don't see anything wrong in the log file (other than the connected CDROM and Floppy drive which are causing errors)!? Sorry, but I'm currently out of ideas.

Hello Julien,

I tried what you wrote:

I checked out the "Time to display list of operating system" checkbox.

After the restart the checkbox is checked again, this setting is also reverted the previous state.
