Windows 2008 R2 issues with audio - No Audio output device detected

We are still on 4.0 update 3 and will be moving to 5.1 here in the next couple of months but we are testing a new Citrix xenapp environment on 2008 R2 servers and noticed that there isn't a sound card installed. On our 2003 32 bit servers there was and we can have audio streamed to their thin clients, etc... Will upgrading to vmware 5.1 with vmware tools 9 provide a fix for this or is this a known limitation? Has anyone else ran into this? Thanks in advance.

There are not virtual soundcard in ESX, the remote protocol is handling that, in this case RDP/ICA/HDX.
