Will ESXi 5.5 support Windows 10?

Looking ahead I was wondering if ESXi 5.5 will support Windows 10 VMs?

I think it will not be supported officially for at least another 6 months, this is again my personal opinion. But you may try running on current version of ESXi 5.5 i.e. ESXi 5.5 U2 and let the community know how is it working Smiley Happy

Thanks Sandeep, but at the moment I do not have ESXi 5.5, so cannot test this Smiley Sad. I would get 5.5 if I knew Windows 10 would run on it Smiley Happy.

I have Windows 10 Server technical preview working in ESXi w/ working VMware tools as well!

You can't install VMware tools from the VM | Guest | Install/Upgrade VMware tools option, you have to mount the ISO found in vmimages or what not on your datastore.  Mount windows.iso and you'll be good to go.  There's one device in the VM that is unknown related to ACPI stuff.

Yes, the tech preview is working in 5.5 with the tools installed. I don't know that it is officially supported at this point.

If it is useful, please mark answer as correct or helpful.

I am running a vm of Windows 10 technical preview on Esxi 5.1 build 1483097 and was able to install vmware tools the normal way from VCenter server, right click on the vm, install VMware tools, etc. Its runs fine, no issues. I installed it as a Windows 8 64bit VM.

Worked with our SCCM engineer, here is the process they used to get 5.0/5.5 u2 going

1) Started an Started SCCM WinPE Custom Image that Includes SCSI Para-virtual Drivers and NIC Driver

2) Stopped install within WinPE, un-mounted boot image

3) Mounted Win 10 ISO, finished install and created a template.

Hi ,

it will not be supported officially , but you can install by selecting vm standard as windows 8 and mounting windows 10 , ISO .

I suggest first you have to try in ESXi 5.5 U2 .

Just have a try

I too am trying to install Windows 10, 64-bit, on ESXi 5.5 U1.

I downloaded ISO file from Microsoft's Windows 10 download page.

But after the installation asks to use 'Express Settings', it hangs.

I created a new VM, selecting Windows 8 as the guest OS.

What am I missing?

Windows 10 is only "supported" as a Tech Preview until now (see  this article for what that means VMware KB: Understanding guest operating system support levels). Check the GuestOS compatibility list:

VMware can't really officially support a completely new OS version that is just being released as we speak. We will probably have to wait for updates from VMware that will enable official Windows 10 support. I assume 5.5 U3 and 6.0 U1 will be released within 1-3 months and will add this official support.

Thank you for update. In vSphere 6.0 we can see Windows 10 option but not in vSphere 5.5.

VMware has officially come with support for Windows 10 now. During the guest OS configuration process, when selecting the Guest OS, Windows 10 selections are available for VMware vSphere 6.0, VMware Workstation 11, VMware Fusion 7 and later releases. For VMware vSphere 5.5, if a Windows 10 option is not available, select Windows 8.

Also, please find a step by step installation of Windows 10 on ESXi 5.5:

Hi There,

As per vmware, Esxi 5.5 don't an option for windows 10.

We can try with windows 8 64 bit  selection and monitor the status. It again a testing.
