Hi guys
I plan to buy a new pc to install ESXi4.1 on but do not find a link that tells me exactly what i need (requirements). I got a quote for a HP Desktop Elite 8200E CMT intel Core i7. Will ESX install and work on this machine or what do you guys recommend i get to properly run ESX?
Thanks in advance for the help
Hello and welcome to the forums,
Have seen ESXi running smoothly on a Dell Optiplex 780.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Nicolás
Thanks for your reply Nicolas - is that a nice powerfull machine. Tried searching but looks as if it only comes with 2GB mem and 250G hard drive. Looking for something with approx 500GB hard drive and 10GB+ memory.
Anything else that anyone know of ?
OK, I know it's old and not a desktop computer but I have a few HP Proliant ML115 servers with 8GB of RAM on my lab. Are cheap and have been running about 10~15 machines on each.
Regards/Saludos

Thanks for your reply
well, i can get my company to buy a not too expensive server also it that is going to help me but the ML 115 is abit on teh oldish side if i remember correctly ![]()
so can i look for any ML server (newer than the ML 115) and it should work?
ok, let me also say the desktop pc my company wouldve bought was about 1000$/R7000 so if i can get a nice server or a nice powerfull desktop that can run esx4.1 it would be great
What would you have bought with that kind of money wanting to run vmware?
Heye, why don't you look @ http://partnerweb.vmware.com/comp_guide2/search.php
select ESXi4, supplier (Dell?) and look for a cheap tower or something
thanks, that works - will have a look
I have found that ESXi 4.1 installs easily on most desktop hardware. I have installed it on a number of Compaq desktops without problems. If you go this route then get something cheap and add on to it. At least that worked well for me. Here is a nice site that lists whiteboxes for ESXi: http://ultimatewhitebox.com/
Hope this is helpful and good luck.
you can probably pick up a pretty decent Dell 2850 for $100-200 US that will work very well with ESXi.
