But only with active SnS Subscription :smileyangry:

It's impossible that customers who paid for ESXi 3.5 before it was free have to reinstall their servers with ESXi 4 ...

Are there other ways to access this file?

I think they have just not made the files available yet. Give them a few days, and update manager will detect them.

I would bet one hundred million euro's that they will be available by this sunday.

Can you share the download?

I'm guessing that is illegal.... yes I know it's free, it's frustrating you have to wait etc, but I'm not prepared to risk the wrath of VMware by sharing it.

Sorry

You cannot use the virtual infrastructure version 2.5 client to upgrade esxi to 4.0. This is the client used to manage esxi 3.5

You need to install the vsphere 4.0 client, per these directions:

following those instructions I was successfully able to upgrade 1 of my 2 ESXi servers. So now I'm running 3.5 and 4.0.

And since we bought the foundation kit when it was on sale instead of the standard, I can't use my vcenter server to manage 4.0, and vmware says I don't have access to a the 4.0 equivalent to vcenter Smiley Sad

Back on topic, the upgrade went off without a hitch! This was on a Dell PowerEdge 2950 III (which is on the HCL, so I'm not really surprised). All I have left to do now is upgrade the vmware tools on each VM.

When you purchased it did you get SNS as well?

Apparently not. I guess we actually purchased the "Vmware ESXi Management Kit" (the promo they had for $495).

It came with the following items:

The ESXi Management Kit includes:

  • vCenter Server Foundation

  • vCenter Agents for 3 hosts

  • 1 year software subscription

  • Limited for use with 3 ESXi hosts[/quote]

From reading the licensing pdf, I have to first upgrade from "Foundation" to "Standard" in the 3.x line, to qualify for the v4 equivelant?

To the OP, sorry about the thread hijack, maybe a mod can split this out?

the upgrade definately took "awhile". I remoted in from home, and started the upgrade on our backup server. It sat at 3% for a very long time, then sat at 34% for awhile. I ended up falling asleep waiting for it to finish (ah the joys of working at night). When I woke up this morning it was done, but alas I have no timeframe of just how long, as I haven't looked at the logs yet.

But it's working flawlessly so far .... I LOVED that it automatically upgraded the vmware tools on my linux guests, without me having to type anything.
