What will happen if I want to install the linux PREEMPT_RT patch on a VM hosted by ESXi ?

Dear all,

I want my real-time application to run in a linux VM, but I have no idea about how to achieve this.

As you may know, there is a real-time patch named 'PREEMPT_RT' and released by the linux kernel workgroup which works well on a native linux.

I want to know if I can install the RT patch on a linux VM. Has anyone ever done this? Is there anything can be expeted? I think this is a very challenging problem.

Now I am trying to install the patch on a native linux. (in progress)

Any information will be high appreciated.

I didnt try this patch on a VM. However the patch behavior should be same on Native linux box and a VM.

If you want to try and ensure that the patch is not giving any harm to the OS, you can take a snapshot of the VM and install the patch.

if the patch works fine without any problem you can delete the snapshot. It will commit the changes (ie patch installation) to the parent disk.

Else you can revert to the parent disk.
