What's the virtual machine configuration maximum on an ESXi 4 host?
Unless I am reading this wrong, this document is very misleading for example we can't add more than 4 vCPU to an ESXi virtual machine.
http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_40_config_max.pdf
vCPU Max is 8 per VM. It states this in Table 1, first line.

8vCPU is the max, but you must have Enterprise Plus licensing.
Like I said, what's the configuration max on ESXi 4.x host?
I can add 8 vCPU with 4i, maybe you have hardware limitation
like we both said 8 vCPU's per guest
Really? I am running IBM x3550 M2, with dual Xeon X5530 CPUs. I can only add 4 vCPU per virtual machine.
Unless you have Enterprise Plus licensing.

On the free ESXi 4.x?
I think you may be getting confused on maximums here. Your original post stated that you want to know the Virtual Machine vCPU Maximum which is completely different from the Host Maximum. Let me try it this way:
Virtual Machine vCPU Maximums:
- Non-Enterprise Plus License = 4vCPU per VM
- Enterprise Plus License = 8vCPU per VM
Host Machine vCPU Maximums:
- 512 vCPU Total

My other question would be why would you want more than 4vCPU on a VM anyway? I feel that there is a very rare occasion that someone may want to do that.

How about memory?
Like he said, enterprise or enterprise + also required
Virtual Machine Maximums: 255GB per VM
Host Maximums: 1TB per Host

We want umlimited vCPUs for testing purposes. We want to test our server under different OSs and CPU/Memory configurations. (Does it run correctly under 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 48 processors on Windows 2003, 2008, and 2008R2.) Virtualization allows us to use 1 48 CPU server by configuring the VM's via VSphere control panel.
