Plaeas take a look at vSphere 6.0 Lockdown Modes which explains how to configure this on vSphere 6. For vSphere 5 see e.g. A Look at ESXi 5 Lockdown Mode.

Hi,

Have a look at this VMware vSphere 5.1, basically Total lock down mode, you can only manage esxi through vCenter.

Hi sorry to revive this post but what happens if, while in "Total Lockdown Mode" in vsphere 5.5, vCenter service on the vCenter server stops due to...for example...a blue screen.   So we can't RDP to the box and we can't get on the console and there apparently is no way to undo lockdown on the host in Total Lockdown Mode.

Is there any scenario that would allow us to recover?   If not, this seems like a disaster waiting to happen... and if setup then that should also come with a "BEWARE!  CONFIGURE THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!" banner...
