What do I need to host customer servers.

Hello.

If I want to host a server from a customer. What do I need?

A collegue claims that we need to have 2 engineers that having vmware certificates, if we want to host custumers servers.

Is that correct?

Regards,

Ulf

Oh, I am sorry this wasn't clear to me from the get-go. No, you do not need any certification whatsoever, only knowledge is required Smiley Happy

It depends on how you want to configure it ....btw I don't think VMware certification is a must have to manage vSphere but at the same time it would be better if one have VMware cert

Hi, it depends on what level of hosting you want to provide to your customer. Speaking in Cloud terms ,do you want to provide Infrastructre, Software or Platform as a Service?

Anyways to build ESXi hosting from ground up you will need someone to set up Networking, Storage, the vSphere infrastructure itself - and if you'd be starting your own domain a Windows/AD Administrators as well. This also includes physical hardware management such as designing, purchasing, installation and cabling of the ESXi hosts.

If you'd tell us what exactly you want to provide to your customer, we can advise you further Smiley Happy

What I want to do, is to offer our customers some windows servers to their iseries servers.

We are not planning to offer servers as a cloud service.

Okay, will you have networking and storage infrastructure already set up? Do you have an active domain where you can add vCenter and its ESXi hosts? Because every additional infrastructure component will need a specialized staff to set up.

Speaking clearly of VMware-infrastructure related issue, someone enthusiastic enough with some hands-on experience and/or VMware: Install Configure Manage training could do the trick. That will help you to get the basic stuff up and running:

  • install vCenter and ESXi hosts
  • add them to domain and vCenter
  • attach storage
  • set up networking via vSwitches
  • create a HA cluster
  • and subsequent VM creation & testing

I have not any technical issue.

I know how to configure my hosts, my VM's and my network to have an functional enviroment.

What I do not know is, if I must be an certified vmware technician to host a customers VM in my vcenter.

The server will be a part of a customers network at our location and the customer will reach that network via high speed VPN.
