Warning: If you upgrade some vms to hardware version7, some might not be able to vomotion any more!

I cant believe vmware's QA missed this one. oh well.

Last week we upgraded alot of our vms to virtual hardware version 7. No problems until today, when we decided to vmotion the vm's, we couldnt some were giving this vmotion error:

host cpu is incompatible with the virtual machine's requirements at cpuid level 0x1 register 'ecx'.

Turns out there is a vmware KB Article: 1013011:

That explains you need to shutdown and reset the cpu masks and start the vm back up.

I am glad to say this did resolve our issue. Just nuts i tell you. Hope this thread helps others out there.

That was the only issue we ran into and it only seemed to be a problem with windows 2003 vms for some reason. But those same vms were ones we P2v some time ago.
