Vmware converter failure (Error cloning volume C:)

Hello,

I have some trouble converting a Win 2003 machine using the Vmware Standalone Converter. I installed it locally on the server id want to convert, but it keeps failing at 1% with the error "Error: Failed cloning on volume C:"

When look in the logs I found this:

-- ERROR -- Convert: converter.fault.CloneFault

(converter.fault.CloneFault) {

dynamicType = ,

faultCause = (vmodl.MethodFault) null,

description = "BlockLevelVolumeCloneMgr::CloneVolume: Detected a write error during the cloning of volume \WindowsBitmapDriverVolumeId=[44-4D-49-4F-3A-49-44-3A-6C-F1-0C-40-64-7F-D9-11-BC-A8-80-6E-6F-6E-69-63]. Error: 78369 (type: 1, code: 4898)",

msg = "",

}

I also tired a chkdsk /r on the C: partion, but it didnt help. I also tired two diffrent versions of the Vmware converter.

Any ideas?

To troubleshoot a conversion that fails at less than 2%:

Use a Local Admin password.

Use IP addresses and verify DNS entries.

Check firewall settings.

Make sure the Converter agent is installed on the source machine.

Verify network adapter settings for speed and duplex.

from Troubleshooting checklist for VMware Converter

Take a look at above mentioned article kb and Best practices for using and troubleshooting VMware Converter

Check your network settings.  If your server is set to autonegotiate and your switch is hard set you will get crc errors and dropped packets.  In my case I had to set both to 100  full and it worked just fine after that.
