I am unable to update VMware tools. Its asks me to update vmx file.
Not sure if below link has already been tried. See if this helps.

Download VMtools pack manually and try to install, it will work.
If still error - go to command prompt, change the drive where package is downloaded
and type "setup /c" for silent installation
