Vmotion process not running on ESXi 5.0 U1

I am experiencing the issue here http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=103026...

I get the symptoms shown in example 2. Basically the vmotion process is not running (does not appear in ps or esxtop) and I cannot telnet to port 8000. I cannot use vmotion to move live VMs to/from this host.

Is there any way to start the vmotion process without any downtime for VMs already running on the host?

Example 2 describes a network configuration issue, so it's necessary that ou provide details about your network setup.

  • Did this setup work before?
  • Do you see an error message (i.e. the one shwn in the KB article)?
  • Does vMotion run on its own subnet/VLAN (i.e. dedicated, non-routed network)?
  • Are the hosts able to vmkping each other?
