Vmotion between 2 esxi housts

Hi,

I have a ESXi server running a virtual machine, i need to move this to a new ESXi host on to its local storage.

Is this possible and how?

If you have vCenter Server you can simple do with a migrate.

Without it, you can use different solutions (the VM must be powered-off):

- SCP or similar (but first you have to enable SSH)

- VMware Converter

- Datastore Browser (save on a local PC and the use on the target to upload the files).

Thanks, i assume these are 3 different methods?

We have no V Centre installed and no access to vmware converter .

Yes, basically are 3 method to copy and transfert files...

There is also a VMware Converter version (standalone version) that is free and you can use it also with ESXi.

download FastScp from Veamm (free)

Shut down the VM

remove it from the inventory on the old host

Connect to both ESX hosts using FastSCP.

Copy the VM files accross to the new datastore.

Use the datastiore browser to find the VM's files, right click the .vmx file and import.

If it fails, open the .vmx file and identify pointers to the odl datastore and correct them

One day I will virtualise myself . . .

VMotion aka Live migration can be performed only with vCenter installed and for VMs residing on shared storage only.

In all other situations only cold migration (with powered off VM) can be performed.
