Virtualising a Redhat physical server

Hi all,

I have a physical box with Red hat running on it, I want to convert it to a vm on to go on my ESXi server.

With windows there is vm converter to send a physical box to an ESXI server.

Is there such a thing for Redhat/Linux?

Is it a case of running a script on the Redhat server to get VMware converter to send the server to an esxi environment?

You should basically do a P2V using the vcenter standalone converter. The latest version 5.5 was released recently and it supports conversion of

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.x (32-bit and 64-bit)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.x (32-bit and 64-bit)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.x (32-bit and 64-bit)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.x (32-bit and 64-bit)

You can find the release notes here VMware vCenter Converter Standalone Release Notes

Yes converter will SSH to the machine and install software that will run in the background copying the data to a new VM created on an ESXi host in the new vSPhere environment
