Virtual machines not available when using backup USB flash drives

I'm running ESXi 5.5 from USB stick, let's say no1. I have three other similar sticks for backup purposes if the original one should fail.

When I add a new virtual machine to ESXi host, it is not available when booting with one of the three backup sticks. So ESXi writes some info to stick it is booted with?

So, do I have to reimage the original stick every time I add a new vm to the host and write that image back to backup sticks? Or what I'm missing here?

I know how to register a vm to inventory but that is not the case here. I just want every USB stick to be exact the same and if one fails, just boot with another.

I have configured scratch partition to local datastore.

The inventory will be stored on the USB drive so when you add a new vm it is written to the current stick.

Hence, the backup sticks are already out of date.

I am assuming you are not running vcentre here.
