Virtual machine disk consolidation failed

Hello Everyone,

I am facing issue in my environment while doing for a disk consolidation from snapshot option.

the error is giving me as " Unable to access file <unspecified filename> since it is locked". i tried teh below command

#esxcli vm process list ( to checke the VM WID)

#esxcli vm process kill --type soft --world-id XXXXX

Above step did not worked stil it was showing unspecified file is locked.

Then i check with

#ps | grep vmx

# then Kill - 9 PID (which is the parent process ID)

My VM got rebooted but issue did not resolved. Please help me or give me the path to find the lock unspecified and how do i unlock the same.

Thanks,

Subhadeep Sen

Do you have a backup server running which has access to the storage (datastores)? Maybe the backup server still has the virtual disk mappped!?

this is well known issue in vadp backup. but none of the backup vendor resolving this issue and they always advice us to upgrade vmware esxi, vcenter or else their backup product. I'm also facing the same issue and as  temporary solution what you need to do restart vpxa agent in snapshot issue vm running esxi and manually consolidate the snapshots again.  if you do restart vpxa agent then lock will be released you may consolidate easily.

Hello All,

@

I am also facing the similar issue.

I have tried with services (vpxa) restart but no success. Tried also with snapshot creation and then using "delete all" optionI have noticed there are 20 snapshot disk for each drive created in the datastore. Looks like these snapshots were not consolidated after VADP backup operations.

Any advise ?

Hi,

There are 3 way inwhich you are unable to consolidate the disk,

1 > if there is any backup agent server which is taking backup might not have released the disk.

solution: go the agent server and go to edit setting and delete this server disk from the backup agent server.

2>2nd is CID PID issue.

Please correct the each snapshots cid and pid and try to consolidate it ( follow generic vmware docs for the same)

3>.

There may be file .CTK file ( change track ) created while consolidation

Solution:

go the esxi and browser for the files of the vm and move any files end with .ctk and consolidate it and power on the vm
