Virtual Storage with open e or Freenas and USB 3.0

hey volks,

First, i know this is not supported, but for my homelap this is not a problem.

I'm thinking about the following solution:

Placing a USB 3.0 Controller in my HP DL360 G5

Connecting a Drive (2TB)  to the Controller

Now my question is:

Would a freeware SAN Appliance like open e, freenas be able to mount the usb 3.0 drive when it is self a virtual machine and the usb drive would be connected to the vm?

What did you volks think about the performance?

What would be a powersaving alternative that costs not more then 300 Euro?
