Virtual Routing on ESXi 5.0 ! Needs 3rd party ?

Hi !

i am setting a lab up in esxi 5 which simulates different networks and ip addresses (internal, dmz, internet and ..)

so i need to have a router in my scenario

can i do that in esxi 5 or i need some third party software like vyatta ?

Hi,

1.)

ESXi is not a General Purpose OS.

ESXi uses the SysLinux only for loading the vmkernel.

2.)

yes, you could use vyatta, or even open-wrt (ver very small) in a VM

Hi,

the vSwitches on the ESX are L2 Switches,

and the ESX does not route between them, so yu have to use a VM as router beween these networks.

ok !

two questions

1- the underlying of esxi is a linux os. can we use that or not ?

2- if not what routing vm or method (simple and efficient) do u suggest ? is vyatta good for a lab setup ?
